Understanding the DOT Return-to-Duty Process
Your Path Back to Work Starts Here
A DOT drug or alcohol violation doesn’t have to define your future. At Alternative Solutions Therapy & Counseling, we help safety-sensitive employees navigate the Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluation process with professionalism, compassion, and clear guidance.
Whether you’re a commercial driver, aviation professional, or other DOT-regulated employee, we’re here to help you understand your requirements and take the next step toward returning to duty.

What Is a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP)?
A Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluates employees who have violated COI drug and alcohol regulations and recommends appropriate education or treatment. The SAP also conducts a follow-up evaluation to determine whether the employee has successfully complied with those recommendations.
At Alternative Solutions Therapy & Counseling, we provide professional, compassionate guidance to help you understand the process and take the next step toward returning to duty.
The Return-to-Duty Process
Follow these steps to get back to work and move forward with confidence.
1. Schedule Your SAP Evaluation
Contact us to schedule an initial evaluation with a qualified SAP.
2. Complete Your Initial Assessment
Your SAP will review your circumstances and determine the appropriate recommendations.
3. Fill Your Recommendations
Complete the education or treatment requirements established during your evaluation.
4. Complete Your Follow-Up Evaluation
Your SAP will assess your compliance with the recommendations.
5. Move Forward With Confidence
Once eligible, you may proceed with employer-directed return-to-duty testing and resume safety-sensitive duties.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
Find quick answers to common questions about the SAP process, evaluations, and returning to work.
How long does the SAP process take?
The timeline depends on your individual assessment, recommended education or treatment, and completion of all required steps.
Can I return to work immediately after my SAP evaluation?
An initial SAP evaluation alone does not authorize a return to safety-sensitive duties. You must complete the applicable return-to-duty requirements.
What happens if I fail a DOT drug or alcohol test?
You must be removed from safety-sensitive duties and complete the applicable SAP return-to-duty process before becoming eligible to resume those functions.
Do I need to register with the DOT Clearinghouse?
FMCSA-regulated commercial drivers may need to use the Clearinghouse and designate their SAP as part of the return-to-duty process.
